Today's road tour takes us to Greater Manchester, and the A627, including the motorway section between Rochdale and Oldham, the A627(M). The road begins at the A664 near Sudden in Rochdale, and links up to the M62 motorway before continuing on to Royton, where the motorway section of the A627 ends with a slip road turn off onto Chadderton Way. The road then forms the first part of the important Oldham Way, before dropping southwards towards Ashton-under-Lyne, and then of lesser importance as we continue through Dukinfield and onto Hyde. A couple of twists, junctions, and borrowed sections of road takes us on to Woodley, Romiley, and finally to Hazel Grove near Stockport. The A627 was part of the original 1922 road numbering scheme, and both its start and end points have changed since then. The road originally began at Ramsbottom and ran through to Gee Cross via its current route. The A627 formed pretty much its current route today when the A627(M) was finished in 1973. The northern section was cut short, and the southern section superceded local B-roads at the time from Gee Cross to Hazel Grove. Filmed August 2022
