Today's road tour takes us across the Yorkshire Dales on the A684, starting in Kendal and ending at Osmotherley, at the entrance to the North York Moors. The A684 is mostly a non-primary route, except for the short section connecting Kendal to the M6 Motorway at Killington. The road winds along the local hills and then into Sedbergh, then on to Garsdale and Hawes, passing underneath the Settle-Carlisle Railway. Single carriageway and narrow in places as well as hilly and twisty, the road continues through the valleys of the Dales and eventually to Leyburn, and then on to Bedale and meeting the A1(M) at Leeming Bar and on to Northallerton. The final stretch links up to the A19 near Osmotherley. The A684 was included in the original 1922 road numbering scheme, and despite its considerable distance is almost completely unchanged west of Bedale, apart from a slight change to accomodate the M6 motorway junction. The old road entered directly into Bedale and along Bedale road (now unclassified) to meet what was the A66 at the Leeming Bar crossroads. The road also followed the B1333 into Northallerton, terminating at what was the A1 at the time on Northallerton High Street. The final section used to be the B1263 to link up to the A19 until the late 1920s, along with the rerouting of the A1 to reflect present day. The redirection in Northallerton was implemented in the 1950s, and the Bedale bypass occurred more recently.
