Today's road tour takes us along the scenic Welsh coastal route, the A496. The road starts at the A470 at Llanelltyd, north of Dolgellau, and follows the Afon Mawddach as it opens out towards the coast. The road takes some sharp twists and turns and narrows on approach to Barmouth, passing the iconic railway bridge and into town. We then continue along the coast catching some riveting views of the coastline before reaching Harlech, and passing under the shadow of its impressive castle. The road then winds back inland through the village of Maentwrog, briefly borrowing the A487, and then on towards Ffestiniog where the road gets progressively hillier. The A496 finishes after dropping in to Blaenau Ffestiniog to meet the A470. The A496 was one of the roads in the initial designation scheme set out in 1922. At that point the road ran from Llanelltyd to Maentwrog, with some minor route alterations. The most notable difference was the road following what is now the B4573 through Harlech and on to Tygwyn, which was slower and wound through woods. Rather quickly (by 1930), the northern terminus was extended to Manod via the current route and what is now an unclassified road. By 1935, it's implied that the road then continued into Blaenau Ffestiniog via what is now the A470, and by 1940 usurped the rest of what is now the A470 and part of the A546 all the way to Llandudno. This was all swept away around 1973 into the modern format, with the A470 extending across Wales south to north.
