Today's road tour takes us almost coast to coast in the northernmost part of England, it's the A69 from the western edge of Newcastle through to Carlisle. With most of the road sitting just a few miles south of Hadrians wall, it's the most northerly east to west route in England, with the eastern end the fastest offering a sizeable chunk of dual carriageway. The road also passes Corbridge, Hexham, Haltwhistle, and Brampton before running in to Carlisle, and serves as a major connecting route regionally. The A69 was included in the original road numbering scheme in 1922, with the road stretching all the way into Newcastle near the railway station, just a few blocks from the A1 which at the time cut through the middle of the city. In 1990 when the highly anticipated A1 western bypass was built, the A69 was scaled back to the East Denton Interchange. The A69 also originally ran directly through Corbridge, Hexham, Haydon Bridge, and Haltwhistle before aligning with today's route at Greenhead. At the Carlisle end, the road used to start outside the rail station at the end of the A6 and start of the A7 roads. Most of the faster section of the A69 west of Newcastle was duelled around 1975-76. Filmed May 2022
