Groups have been apart of the hip hop culture since the beginning; from The Sugarhill Gang to the Migos. Some of the greatest emcees of all time have come by way of a duo or group, and many of these groups are the faces of the hip hop genre for listeners When thinking about hip hop groups, some of the big names that come to mind include the Wu-Tang Clan, OutKast, N.W.A., Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest, and Public Enemy. But these are only the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of other groups and duos that appear on this countdown But what exactly makes a good group? For our criteria, we focused mostly on the catalog and output of the group (including solo releases), style, along with their content and messaging Our biggest criteria is that the group needs to at least have one album or mixtape to their name. We generally do not look at influence that much. We do factor it in, but it is our least important criteria. Better music is better music, better artists are better artists, and in this case, better groups and better groups. Additionally, we do not factor in things like "replay value" or work ethic at all. Neither of these are arguments to us. As we say in all of our videos, we are unoriginal copycats! We will never deny this. We are always behind the curve, and as such we copy others to the best of our abilities because we have nothing else better going on with our lives. Our orders aren't super important with our rankings, which is also the case here. The only part that truly matters would be the top 15. Some notes: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib are an unofficial duo. If you go onto streaming services, there will not be a separate profile for “Freddie Gibbs & Madlib” in the same way there are separate profiles for Blu & Exile, Showbiz & A.G., or Kool G Rap & DJ Polo. Thus, Freddie and Madlib will be excluded. Black Hippy and The Juice Crew will not appear on this list because they don’t have an official release as a collective. They’ve appeared on songs; but they need a full record (album or mixtape). Record labels like Dreamville, Odd Future, Doomtree, Anticon, A$AP Mob, & PRO ERA were excluded. This is because they are record labels. Griselda for example, is an exception. This is because while they are also a record label, they continued to release music together under the Griselda name but released their debut album “WWCD” on EMINEM’s Shady Records. In other words, they remained a group outside the context of their label. Souls of Mischief are apart of Hieroglyphics, 7L & Esoteric are apart of CZARFACE as well as Army of The Pharaohs (as are the Demigodz), and as such; them and other big supergroups like Boot Camp Clik, The Eastern Conference, & Native Tongues will not be in the list either because that’s just repetitive. For those big supergroups, we looked at what group the bigger accomplishments. Do Smif-N-Wessun, O.G.C., Black Moon, and Heltah Skeltah accomplish more as BCC, or did they do better as individual acts? Rage Against The Machine, Young Fathers, Gorillaz, Fort Minor, The Uncluded, cLOUDDEAD, Silk Sonic, & Ho99o9 aren’t hip hop groups in our eyes, but they have elements of hip hop in their music. You could make the argument that they are rap groups, but for us, they aren’t. Handsome Boy Modeling School and Standing On The Corner are production groups, so they will not be included. This is for rapping groups Honorable Mentions go to Rhyme Asylum, Styles of Beyond, World Class Wreckin’ Cru, Deep Puddle Dynamics, Sonic Sum, [sLUms]., Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf, Children of the Corn, Crooklyn Dodgers, Medslaus, and Language Arts Crew.
