Part-2 of Panpatia Col. trek, in continuation of Part-1, is about the trek from Parvati Col. and crossing over Panpatia Col. and camping little short-off Sujal Sarovar. The trek was organised during June 2022 under the aegis of STEP (www.steptrekkers.org) and Somnath Pal was the trek leader. Panpatia Col. trek is rated as "High Risk and Low Success rate" - firstly, it entails continuous trudging on loose moraines and rocky patches before finally reaching the ice field above 17000'; and secondly because one has to traverse through 8 Kms long ice field. It becomes unavoidable to camp overnight in the ice field and risk of AMS at this height gets bigger if physically unfit. As was true about this trek that weather might turn hostile anytime we remained stranded for two and half-hours in the ice field due to loss of direction owing to sudden whiteout. Wisdom of the leader, Somnath Pal in exploring possibilities to negotiate entire ice field on the same day finally paid-off as weather cleared up. We were lucky enough to cross over the entire 8 Kms ice field in 7 hours without camping overnight. In the history of Panpatia Col. no other team had ever crossed over ice field without overnight camping. More so, I call it mystical - for the blessings of the Almighty upon all of us and the protection came from the universal forces as weather remained on hold till we crossed over Panpatia Col. and reached a suitable camping ground (short-off Sujal Sarovar)! Watch the video as the worrisome moments were catching up and unfolding before us. This trek has been special for me because of my determination to challenge and overcome phobia of this trek on my mind and secondly to pray for the peace of soul of Supriyo Burman, our friend who had succumbed on this ice field in 2016!
