Billy Seatter has completed a Modern Apprenticeship in Marine Aquaculture. This was undertaken through his employment with Scottish Sea Farms in Orkney combined with studying at the NAFC Marine Centre UHI in Shetland. There is significant growth ongoing within the Aquaculture sector with local businesses investing in new sites and infrastructure around the coast of Orkney, so there are great opportunities for anyone interested in working in this area, including those who live in the north isles. Local Aquaculture businesses, like Scottish Sea Farms, invest in their staff development through a structured training programme which enables progression through the organisation from trainee positions right up to management. Undertaking an apprenticeship is a good way to develop your skills and experience while you work. Apprenticeships within the Aquaculture sector are run through the NAFC Marine Centre UHI and assessors travel from Shetland to visit apprentices at their workplace. As well as the Modern Apprenticeship, NAFC Marine Centre offer a variety of short courses in Aquaculture, more information can be found here: https://www.nafc.uhi.ac.uk/courses/aq... Locally, Orkney College UHI offers a range of course through the Maritime Studies Department which may be beneficial to those interested in working in Aquaculture. These include courses you can study whilst still as school such as National 5s in Maritime Skills and Costal Navigation.
