In this video, I share with you a survival technique for tackling steep terrain on cross-country skis. This Step Stem Christie is called many different things by many different people, such as a "Step Telemark" by Steve Barnett in his book "Cross-Country Downhill and Other Nordic Mountain Skiing Techniques" (1983). There are many variations of movements and sequences of movements for this technique within the XCD community, as well as traditional Alpine skiers. But the way I demonstrate the Step Stem Christie, here, is my personal preference for executing this valuable xc ski downhill technique. I provide two different scenarios during my demos 1) firm snow, lower angled terrain, on skinny skis; and 2) deep snow, steep terrain, on wide backcountry xc skis. I wish I would've had access to steep and icy terrain for this video. However, despite the circumstances being different for each scenario, the same basic principles and movements of this technique apply. Honestly, though, that's going to be the case no matter what we're doing. Being adaptable is the key element. Keep in mind that when skiing steep angles of terrain, you're going to be in avalanche territory. And this yields a whole other set of risks and variables that I'm not going to get into. Learning about avalanches (and how to avoid them!) is your responsibility. Just know that when in doubt, you should turn back. The skis that I was running in this video were a set of Fischer S-Bound 98 with Rottefella 3-Pin bindings, and wearing Fischer BCX Transnordic 75mm boots. I also was running Asnes Gamme 54 with NNN BC manual bindings. I was wearing Fischer BCX GT boots.
