Scoliosis patients often seek a form of activity or exercise that is safe to do with their scoliosis. One of the sports most frequently asked about is swimming. There was a time when swimming was used as a treatment cycle for scoliosis, and many still believe that. However, there's confusion about the concept of how swimming can help someone with scoliosis. To better understand the impact of swimming on scoliosis, we must also understand how scoliosis progresses. There are two main progression factors: 1. Growth 2. Gravity The first one, growth, applies to children and adolescents. As they experience rapid growth, that's when scoliosis will progress. The second one, gravity, is the main factor in adults, and it happens slowly over time. So, depending on these, swimming could be good or bad. It is important to note our body is not designed to be in the water without gravity. The longer a person is in the water, the more of a neurological adjustment will be needed when they are out of the water so the body can adjust to gravity again. Also, the position in which a person swims can put more pressure on the mid-back and cause a bigger flattening of their thoracic spine, which is not positive for a person with scoliosis. Some good aspects of swimming for scoliosis are: -Swimming is done in a symmetrical motion -Swimming removes compression from the spine -Patients can exercise in a painless and compression-free environment How good or bad swimming is for scoliosis will depend on every patient's scoliosis. But we know anything like competitive swimming, done for 4-5 hours a day, will not be good for scoliosis. Scoliosis patients will get the most benefit from recreational swimming, for 1-2 hours per day, a few times per week. Before starting any exercise routine, it is important to speak with a treatment provider that understands your scoliosis and keep any sport on the recreational side of it, not the competitive.
