Tommy Lawton “I could have killed him!” That’s what football legend Bill Shankly said about another soccer legend Tomy Lawton. It was at an international between the old rivals Scotland and England and Tommy scored a critical goal in the match. Tommy is rated as one of the greatest centre forwards ever to play for his country and when he signed for Notts County, it was for a British record transfer fee of £20,000. Tommy became a good friend of mine, and he guested on a special weekly pre-match series we ran on Radio Nottingham called Sporting Choice on our Saturday Show on 31st December 1983. He talks about his life in football and gives his views on the state of the game, comments that still ring true 20 years later. He also chooses his favourite records.
