Fraktou Forest: An untouched monument of Greek nature It is difficult to have visited the virgin forest of Fraktos Paranesti. The closest one can get to by car is 2.5 hours away from Drama – and then hours of walking to get there. This natural isolation, which led to the complete absence of human activity, is what saved it. As a result, it is considered the most complete ecologically virgin forest in Europe, a unique natural laboratory and at the same time an environmental treasure for the country. For this reason, the local authorities in collaboration with expert scientists are trying to join the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The forest of Fraktos, with an area of approximately 120,000 sq. m., is located at the northeastern end of the Rhodope mountain range. "When the first roads were opened in the 70s, a divine gift was "discovered", a virgin forest whose existence we did not know", explains Elsa Konstantinidou, director of Drama Forests. “In 1980 its most untouched part, 5,500 acres in area, was declared a preserved natural monument, while by 1987 a zone of 53,000 acres surrounding it was designated as a wildlife sanctuary. The virgin forest of Fraktos is the only primary forest of its kind in our country, as it was completely unaffected by human activity, because it is located at a great distance from the nearest settlements and, due to the large, steep slopes of the relief, it is unsuitable for grazing. As a result, it is Europe's most complete ecological virgin forest, as predator populations regulate the populations of other animals resulting in an outstanding ecological balance." More than 140 species of birds, 40 species of mammals (many endangered, such as the bear, the wolf and the only native deer of the country), hundreds of species of flora, many of which are endemic, have been recorded in the virgin forest. "Its structure is impressive as we meet very tall stands of beech, fir and spruce - the fir reaches 60 meters high, as high as a twenty-story apartment building, while the beeches are 45 meters and 450 years old." in 2020 the Municipality of Paranesti, Drama decided to claim the inclusion of the Fraktos virgin forest in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. He assigned the drafting of the relevant file to the UNESCO University Chair, which is established in the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment in Drama and belongs to the International University of Greece, headed by Professor Dim. Emmanouloudi. The effort was launched in November 2020 under the auspices of the Greek National Committee for UNESCO and the Region of Eastern Macedonia Thrace. The first goal is the inclusion of the virgin forest in the "Potential List" of candidate regions of our country (Tentative List), with the aim of then being Greece's candidacy in the international tender process. Το κοντινότερο σημείο στο οποίο μπορεί να φτάσει κάποιος με αυτοκίνητο, είναι 2,5 ώρες μακριά από τη Δράμα – και μετά ακολουθούν ώρες πεζοπορίας για να το προσεγγίσεις. Αυτή η φυσική του απομόνωση, που οδήγησε στην παντελή απουσία ανθρώπινης δραστηριότητας, είναι που το διέσωσε. Ως αποτέλεσμα, θεωρείται το πληρέστερο οικολογικά παρθένο δάσος στην Ευρώπη, ένα μοναδικό φυσικό εργαστήριο και ταυτόχρονα περιβαλλοντικός θησαυρός για τη χώρα. Για τον λόγο αυτό οι τοπικές αρχές σε συνεργασία με ειδικούς επιστήμονες προσπαθούν να ενταχθεί στη λίστα των Μνημείων Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO.Το δάσος του Φρακτού, έκτασης περίπου 120.000 στρ., βρίσκεται στο βορειοανατολικό άκρο της οροσειράς της Ροδόπης. «Οταν τη δεκαετία του ’70 διανοίχθηκαν οι πρώτοι δρόμοι, τότε “ανακαλύφθηκε” ένα θείο δώρο, ένα παρθένο δάσος του οποίου την ύπαρξη δεν γνωρίζαμε», εξηγεί η Ελσα Κωνσταντινίδου, διευθύντρια Δασών Δράμας. «Το 1980 το πιο ανέγγιχτο κομμάτι του, έκτασης 5.500 στρεμμάτων, ανακηρύχθηκε διατηρητέο μνημείο της φύσης, ενώ έως το 1987 μια ζώνη 53.000 στρεμμάτων που το περιβάλλει ορίστηκε ως καταφύγιο άγριας ζωής. Το παρθένο δάσος του Φρακτού είναι το μοναδικό πρωτογενές του είδους στη χώρα μας, καθώς έμεινε εντελώς ανεπηρέαστο από ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα, επειδή βρίσκεται σε μεγάλη απόσταση από τους κοντινότερους οικισμούς και λόγω των μεγάλων, απότομων κλίσεων του αναγλύφου είναι ακατάλληλο για βόσκηση.Ως αποτέλεσμα, πρόκειται για το πληρέστερο οικολογικά παρθένο δάσος της Ευρώπης, καθώς οι πληθυσμοί των αρπακτικών ρυθμίζουν τους πληθυσμούς των υπόλοιπων ζώων με αποτέλεσμα μια εξαιρετική οικολογική ισορροπία».
