In this episode of The Feminine Stoic, we speak with Nancy Sherman, one of the leading contemporary philosophers of Stoicism, emotion, and moral life. Nancy Sherman is a distinguished professor at Georgetown University and served as the first Chair of Ethics at the U.S. Naval Academy, where she worked closely with service members on questions of character, leadership, trauma, and moral responsibility. Her work integrates ancient philosophy and modern life, with a special focus on war, moral injury, and emotional life. This conversation moves beyond the modern misunderstandings of Stoicism as emotional suppression or “toughing it out.” Instead, we explore Stoicism as a philosophy deeply concerned with vulnerability, judgment, responsibility, and how human beings actually endure hardship. We discuss: The surprising connections between military discipline, ballet, modern dance, and emotional expression Why Stoicism is not about suppressing emotions or having a “stiff upper lip” The difference between resilience and denial How anger, grief, and vulnerability were understood by ancient philosophers like Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Aristotle Why PTSD and moral injury affect soldiers and women profoundly How community and friendship—not self-reliance alone—help us survive hardship We also touch on Nancy’s upcoming book, How to Have a Soul, and why Aristotle’s view of flourishing, friendship, and luck still matters today. This episode is honest, knowledgeable, and somewhat sassy - a conversation about Stoicism and Aristotelianism that leaves room for feeling, limits, and care for others.
