Above the Rim of the Nest Yesterday I made my way back out to Eagle Nest Number One, drawn by that quiet responsibility that comes with watching over something wild and growing. The eaglets are no longer small, downy shapes tucked safely beneath their parents. They are big now, all elbows and feathers, filling the nest until there is hardly room left to turn around. With space at a premium, mom or dad has taken up a watchful post on a nearby branch, close enough to step in, far enough to let them learn. The photos I am sharing are not the sharpest in my portfolio, but they carry honesty. From nearly a half mile away, through warming air and the first thickening of spring leaves, they show what matters. The eaglets look strong and healthy, most of their feathers grown in, leaving them blotchy and oversized in that awkward stage just before grace arrives. They are already the size of a roaster chicken, maybe bigger, and they squabble with one another for space, practicing balance and hierarchy without even knowing it. There was food in the nest, some small animal, likely a rabbit. The eaglets barely acknowledged it until mom stepped in and did what only she can do, tearing it into pieces and reminding them that survival is still a guided lesson. At one point, junior number one began walking the edge of the nest, leaning just enough to make my breath catch. Mom noticed too. She dropped down quickly, steady and certain, a silent reminder that independence comes in stages. This nest will stay under my watch until I leave the area sometime in May. The second nest continues to puzzle me. The adults are present there, yet they still leave it unattended at times. It may be that eggs have not been laid yet, or that nature is simply running on a different clock. As the days warm, the foliage thickens, and seeing into that nest becomes harder with each passing week. Still, I will keep looking, waiting for that first small sign of life rising above the rim. These moments are never about perfect photographs. They are about bearing witness, about standing at a respectful distance and watching life unfold exactly as it should.
