On August 26, 2023, H.E. Dr Hage G. Geingob, the late President and Commander-in-Chief of Namibia, delivered a keynote address during the 33rd Heroes' Day Commemoration held in Windhoek. Key Details of the Commemoration • Venue Relocation: Originally scheduled for Omuthiya in the Oshikoto region, the official event was moved to the Independence Stadium in Windhoek to accommodate a high-profile state visit. • Guest of Honour: President Miguel Díaz-Canel of Cuba was the guest of honour, signifying the deep historical and revolutionary ties between Namibia and Cuba. • Historical Significance: The day marks the 1966 battle at Omugulugwombashe, which launched Namibia’s armed liberation struggle. Summary of President Geingob’s 2023 Address In his speech, President Geingob emphasised the transition from the struggle for political liberation to the modern struggle for economic emancipation. • Honouring Sacrifice: He paid homage to the "brave souls" and "gallant sons and daughters" whose sacrifices at the home front and in exile secured Namibia’s sovereignty. • Economic Emancipation: Geingob stressed that political independence is incomplete without economic freedom. He called for "lightning speed" to capitalise on Namibia’s economic endowments to create jobs and reduce poverty. • National Unity: He reiterated the "One Namibia, One Nation" narrative, urging citizens to place national interest above personal prejudices and tribalism to maintain the hard-won "Namibian House". • Modern Heroism: He challenged current generations to become "modern-day heroes" by fighting contemporary enemies such as corruption, hunger, and gender-based violence.
