This is a 13-minute video of highlights from the July 9, 1970 Major League Baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Tigers in Detroit, won by the Tigers, 7-3. It is from the WHDH TV in Boston broadcast, with Ken Coleman and Ned Martin on play by play and Johnny Pesky on analysis. After a 6-1 homestand, the Red Sox were presumably in good spirits as they flew to Detroit for a five-game series with the Tigers. But after dropping three out of four to the Tigers, two via walk-off, the good feelings had to have dwindled. And after this game, lost amidst a heated battle with the umpires, there was nothing but absolute frustration. The Red Sox led, 3-2, entering the Tigers' half of the sixth, but Boston starter Mike Nagy walked the bases loaded with two outs. When plate umpire John Rice called ball four on a Nagy pitch to Dick McAuliffe, forcing in the tying run, irate catcher Jerry Moses sprang up, turned, said something, and was ejected by Rice. Nagy, equally incensed but being held back by teammates, kept swearing at Rice and trying to get at him, and when senior ump Larry Napp came over and Nagy swore at him, Napp tossed Nagy. George Thomas, arguing from the dugout with first base ump Marty Springstead about a call from a few weeks ago, then also got into it with Rice and was ejected. The Sox got the final out and were actually still in the game at that point. But in the very next inning Gary Wagner loaded the bases with Tigers. Vicente Romo came on and gave up what looked like a grand slam to former Red Sox Dalton Jones. In the excitement of watching his long drive go into the right field seats, Jones passed teammate Don Wert halfway to second base. Since there was only one out, the three base runners were allowed to score and Jones was ruled out at second. The Tigers were ahead, 6-3, and added a run in the eighth. With the victory they were beaming. The Sox? They were still steaming. Notes: In the top of the seventh, the Tigers' Mickey Stanley makes an outstanding catch of a drive off the bat of Tom Satriano (10:08) ... Anybody remember anything about Ken Szotkiewicz, who played shortstop for the Tigers? ... This game has been out there, and I've had it up as part of one big file. But I'm posting all the games individually now. Box score in comments. Not copyrighted. I don't claim the rights to, and don't profit from, this video. I posted it for historical and educational purposes, and for those who will enjoy it as much as I did.
