Here are the calls of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker recorded in Louisiana in 1935 by Arthur A. Allen. Habitat destruction and hunting unfortunately lead to the probable extinction of this magnificent species. While the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is still listed as critically endangered by most sources, it is almost certainly extinct, with the last accepted sighting in the United States being in 1944. Several people claim to have seen this bird in recent years, and even claim to have video evidence. While exciting, these claims are not conclusive, and all supposed video footage of these birds is quite poor quality making identification near impossible. Many people may mistake the similarly looking Pileated Woodpecker for the Ivory-billed. Unfortunately, we may have lost this bird forever. Many thanks to all those who captured video and audio recordings of these woodpeckers when they were alive. Artwork by: John James Audubon (1785-1851) This video is up on my other channel Listener of Nature, but I wanted to have it on this channel as well.
