History of Japanese settlement in the Platte River Valley

In the early 1900s, when railroad building ended in the Panhandle Region, many young Japanese laborers settled in the Platte River Valley. Nebraska Stories takes a look at the history of Japanese families in western Nebraska. Note: Since this story first aired, there’s been a concerted effort by descendants of these early Nebraskans to save Japanese Hall. In December 2019, the social hall was moved to the grounds of the Legacy of the Plains in Gering and is now undergoing restoration. When finished, the hall will serve as a museum dedicated to the history of the Japanese of the Northern Plains.
