On the night of July 25-26, 1944, Japanese forces launched what they believed would be a devastating multi-pronged counterattack against the 3rd Marine Division on Guam, striking from the Fonte Plateau to the beaches in a desperate bid to drive the Americans back into the sea. Instead of breaking the Marine lines, the attackers found themselves trapped in a deadly killing field as Marines held their positions and systematically destroyed the infiltrating forces with coordinated artillery, tank, and machine-gun fire. By dawn, over 3,200 Japanese soldiers lay dead, their "decisive blow" had shattered against Marine discipline and firepower, effectively ending organized resistance on central Guam and sealing Japan's fate on the island.
