eSHIA - Sayyid Dhiya al-Khabbaz begins his discussion by mentioning how a few years ago there was a movement that had begun which intended to purge the maqātil literature of those elements that they considered were weak, fables or didn’t seem in line with their image of Imam Hussein (a). What had begun as a very rudimentary movement is now gaining traction and every year the number of things that are being doubted are increasing. Some examples of doubts that have been raised: 1. Imam Hussein ('a) did not tell Hurr ‘May your mother mourn for you.’ 2. Muslim ibn Aqil was not deceived and thrown into a pit 3. Hazrat Abbas (‘a) did not say the couplet, ‘If you cut my right hand, I will not stop protecting my religion.’ 4. It is not proven that Hazrat Abbas ('a) was struck with an iron mace on his head 5. Umm al-Banīn was not alive at the time of the event of Karbala 6. Qasim ibn Hasan was not a child in Karbala (i.e. he had not reached puberty) 7. Laylā was not present in Karbala – these are figments of the imagination of orators 8. Imam Hussein ('a) did not place his tongue in the mouth of 'Ali al-Akbar ('a) 9. Imam Hussein ('a) did not come to the body of Ali al-Akbar ('a) 10. Imam Hussein ('a) did not take his infant son onto the battlefield If all these, and their like, are doubted, rejected and labelled as later fabrications then nothing is left of the event of Karbala. This movement of purging the literature to gain ‘a real picture of the event of Karbala’ – a picture that those pushing this movement have created in their minds – is a movement that is gaining traction and thus must be responded to in an academic manner.
