Horizontal Bobbin VS Front loading

🧵Very often I see discussions about vertical and horizontal bobbin case sewing machines. 💠Let's talk about 5 main differences between these two types of bobbin mechanisms. ✅1. VIBRATION and NOISE. A horizontal loading bobbin case will significantly decrease vibration and noise while stitching. This is especially noticeable on a higher stitching speed. This is due to the fact that the shuttle (hook) moves in a circle forming each stitch. This is unlike a vertical loading bobbin mechanism - in this setting the shuttle moves side to side forming each stitch and on higher stitching speeds it causes a "rocking" of the mechanism and as a result the entire sewing machine. This will be more noticeable especially in sewing machines that are smaller and lighter. So if your main sewing projects are embroidery or quilting, a horizontal bobbin case would definitely be a better choice! ✅2. BOBBIN THREAD TENSION ADJUSTMENT. A vertical bobbin case will give you fast and easy access to the screw that adjusts thread tension. In a horizontal bobbin case it is a tricky task- you will need to unscrew and take off the top metal plate to be able to reach the screw that adjusts tension. But, I see more and more sewing machines with horizontal loading that have a small hole in the plastic in front of the screw so you can reach it and adjust in a much easier way. So if your machine also has this small hole- you are lucky, it's not an issue for you! ✅3. SERVICE AND FIXING. Vertical bobbin mechanism is MUCH easier to disassemble to clean and fix. If a piece of broken thread or needle is stuck inside and has entirely jammed the mechanism- no problem- you just need to disassemble the parts, clean it, oil it, assemble it back and continue sewing. Unlike in horizontal loading. You will need to unscrew the top metal plate and clean what you can. But if the mechanism is still jammed you will need to bring it to a mechanic to do more serious work and make your machine able to sew again. ✅4. ZIGZAG WIDTH. Horizontal bobbin mechanism allows you to make a significantly wider distance in zigzag stitching which will allow you to have wider embroidery options. ✅5. BOBBIN THREADS REMAIN. A clear plastic screen on a horizontal bobbin case will let you see clearly how much thread is left on the bobbin. When is it important? Before you stitch top stitching, embroidery or buttonholes, it's almost impossible to make an unnoticeable connection if the lower thread is finished in the middle of the stitching line. In a vertical bobbin case the only way to check is to take the bobbin out of the bobbin case and see how much thread is left. And this is what I definitely recommend to do before starting embroidery stitching, topstitching, or making buttonholes. 💠As you can see, there is no such thing as a better or worse bobbin mechanism.
