Blue Peter Braves The Cumbrian Weather: Carlisle and Arnside The Lakelander 5 July 2025 A miserable day but would Blue Peter and its accompanying locos brighten up our day? Carlisle station seemed busier than normal for a Saturday. Non-passenger trains included a Class 56; a 158 unit heading from Brodies at Kilmarnock to Neville Hill - not via the S&C but over the WCML to Carnforth before reversing towards Hellifield and Leeds; Intermodals behind 66s and Class 90s. An hour after Blue Peter had sailed off to the Cumbrian Coast I decided to risk the weather and catch the Lakelander rounding the edge of Morecambe Bay at Arnside. All seemed ok at first looking across the Kent sands - it was grey and very windy but visibility wasn't that bad. However, in the hour between arriving and the Lakelander appearing, two showers passed over. You could see the wall of grey approaching. One I escaped to my car to shelter. The other came down as Blue Peter had passed Grange over Sands and its white steam trail showed her progress. I had driven this far, I wasn't going to skip recording the event!
