Roberto Bertero, at the organ of Turin’s Santuario della Consolata (Church of the Virgin of the Consolation), performs the Prelude in E-flat minor, BWV 853, which belongs to the first book of "The Well-Tempered Clavier”, the great cycle of preludes and fugues that Johann Sebastian Bach completed in 1722. In this collection, each key becomes an opportunity to explore a particular expressive character, and the Prelude in E-flat minor stands out for its deeply interior atmosphere. The piece is constructed on a slow, continuous movement, made up of lines that intertwine with great sobriety; everything seems oriented toward a intimate, contemplative dimension. The phrases follow one another like meditative thoughts, while the harmony proceeds with measured steps, creating a mystical, almost suspended tension. Time seems to expand. Precisely because of this character, Alfredo Casella has seen in this piece a sort of musical meditation before the painting Lamentation (The Mourning of Christ) by Giotto: as if the listener were invited to pause in silence before a sacred scene, slowly observing the gestures and emotions. Performed on the organ, this piece takes on a special depth. The natural breathing of the instrument and the continuity of the sound allow the lines to unfold with greater breadth, accentuating the solemn and meditative nature of the prelude and highlighting the extraordinary purity of Bach's writing. From this perspective, the prelude in E-flat minor appears as a brief but intense sonic contemplation: a music that invites us to listen more deeply than to be astonished, and which once again reveals Bach's ability to transform musical form into a spiritual experience. 💬 If you enjoyed this performance, please like the video and subscribe for more organ masterpieces!
