Often described as the “decayed parish” Burgh Parva is a deserted medieval village in Norfolk. It’s old church called St Mary’s dates back to the early 14th century and was abandoned in the late 1600s. All that remains of St Mary’s is the dilapidated tower which deteriorated further after being struck by lighting in the 1980s, work has since been carried out to stabilise the structure. The reasons for its abandonment are not precisely clear. The bubonic plague and subsequent population decline is suggested to have played its part in its dereliction. And after the reformation (when Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church) it is thought that Burgh Parva / Melton Constable struggled to support two churches. Services finally switched to Melton Constable in 1665. When the railways came the population of Melton Constable spiked and a temporary iron church was erected in 1903. This ‘tin tabernacle’ was built in the graveyard adjacent to the ruined St Mary’s. There are First World War soldiers buried in the graveyard who sadly died during their service which are commemorated by Commonwealth War Graves Commision headstones. Lest we forget.
