Melanie Wenger has served as the Director of Montgomery County’s Office of Intergovernmental Relations (OIR) for almost 23 years – outlasting three Montgomery County Executives and four Governors! In 2000, Wenger became the first woman to ever work as the Chief of Staff for a Maryland Senate President, where she managed Senator’s Mike Miller’s legislative package for three years. Prior to this, she worked for 12 years in the Maryland Department of Legislative Services in several positions, and was a long-time board member and multi-term president for Maryland Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA). Her work on finance and juvenile justice at the state level has informed not only her decisions in advocating for the county, but also her personal life. In this episode of "Kibbitzing with Kagan," we discuss her journey moving around the country; working with former Senate President Mike Miller; what the Office of Intergovernmental Relations does; fighting for Montgomery County in the midst of budget crises; changes in the county’s demographics and leadership over time; protecting federal workers under the “Trump/Musk” administration; collaborating with nearby jurisdictions; and MoCo’s legislative priorities this year.
