#BikeKitchen #steelisreal #SchwinnCruiser #vintage Thursday at the Bike Kitchen we began work on a donated 1982 Schwinn Cruiser step -through. The frame and paint are in good condition. It is a 5-speed. The rear derailler and thumb shifter work , although they need cleaning and adjustment. It is in original condition. We will keep as many of the original components as possible. The tires have sidewall cracks and will be replaced. The fenders are in good condition, although a little rusted. The tires and tubes are the original ones that came with the bike. The tires were made in Pennsylvania and are nylon. You can identify a Schwinn made in Chicago by : the electro-forged head tube, the welded on kickstand, the weld line on the bottom of the bottom bracket, the crimped ends on the chain stays, and the screws on the badge (not riveted or glued). We removed the fenders and wheels and greased the front hub. We removed the headset and the one piece crank and bottom bracket. The bottom bracket and its caged bearings were covered with hard, thick, cream colored gunk that resembled semi-hardened plumbers putty. It was a mess. We haven't seen anything like it. Fortunately, we were able to remove it with paint thinner. We will give the frame a good cleaning this weekend and begin to put the bike back together next week in the Bike Kitchen.
