ILLUMINATION AWARD FOR OUTDOOR LIGHTING DESIGN Special Citation for Transforming a Park PARK OF CULTURE AND REST NAMED BY M.O. HUROV, Mariupol, Ukraine Designer: Mykola Kabluka – Expolight The design for this park is inspired by the city of Mariupol’s location by both the sea and river. For lighting in the main pedestrian alley, the team used glassblowing techniques to develop lamps with custom caustic lenses, simulating the effect of water and transforming the walkway into a river bed that rushes into the sea. Similarly, on a platform next to the central fountain, a special device passes a moving laser beam through a prism molten from glass, which is also in motion. The prism’s non-uniform thickness and beads irregularly refract light and create color changes. At the fountain itself, RGB luminaires are installed in nozzles that also simultaneously emit water jets and steam. During events and performances, lasers mounted on supports near the fountain pierce the steam with horizontal beams of light, creating the effect of clouds and waves overhead. Combined, the music, colored steam, jet illumination and laser movement emulate the feeling of being under water. The team also added a permanent light installation titled “Breathing Trees” to one of the park’s shady alleys. Smooth lighting transitions on the trees alongside themed music create a relaxing mood that corresponds with each season. Both the lighting tactics and music used to create shows at the main fountain, as well as those used for the “Breathing Tree” installation, are controlled by a cloud server, which allows the team to remotely program the settings from around the globe.
