Have a good look at Maatwerk, the amazing design made by the Glithero design studio, and discover the connection between the old crafts of making organ books and weaving. What do the old crafts of making organ books and weaving have in common? Both make use of a ‘coding’ technique where holes are punched into long paper rolls or cardboard sheets, which are fed into the machine: a street organ or a weaving loom. With their fresh, open-minded approach of these old techniques and finding new applications for them, Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gameren of the Glithero design studio perfectly match one of the Zuiderzee Museum’s major missions. For their project the two developed a weaving loom that is driven by an organ book, the ‘coded’ music script for a street organ. Or, in other words, a machine that weaves organ music into textile: the ultimate visualization of the term ‘musical pattern’!
