For centuries before European contact, the Timucua people inhabited the Tomoka and Halifax River region, relying on these waterways for fishing, canoe travel, and trade. Archaeological evidence throughout the park confirms long-term Indigenous settlement along these river corridors. During the early 19th century, the area became part of Florida’s plantation frontier. One of the documented landowners was John Addison, a plantation owner whose original homestead and burial site were located nearby. During the period of Seminole conflicts, raids in the region led to the destruction and loss of many early settlement sites, including Addison’s original gravesite. After the original location was lost, John Addison’s headstone was later recovered, repaired, and relocated to Tomoka State Park to ensure its preservation. The marker now stands near the recreation hall as a rare physical link to Florida’s volatile frontier era, reflecting the challenges faced by early settlers during territorial conflicts. Today, Tomoka State Park preserves this layered history alongside its natural beauty — connecting Indigenous heritage, plantation-era settlement, Seminole War impacts, and modern conservation.
