Long before military construction, the surrounding islands were used by Indigenous peoples for fishing and coastal travel, taking advantage of the bay’s protected waters. Following the Spanish–American War, the U.S. Army identified Tampa Bay as a critical port requiring modern coastal defense. Construction of Fort De Soto began in 1898, making it one of the largest and most advanced coastal fortifications in the United States. The fort included massive concrete batteries, underground magazines, command posts, and long-range artillery designed to protect the bay from naval attack. Although Fort De Soto never fired its weapons in combat, it played an important role in national defense through World War I and World War II, serving as a training and readiness installation. Advances in military technology eventually rendered fixed coastal artillery obsolete, and the fort was decommissioned after World War II. Today, the preserved batteries — including Battery Laidley, Battery McIntosh, and the Armstrong gun positions — stand as powerful reminders of America’s coastal defense era. Fort De Soto remains one of the best-preserved examples of turn-of-the-century military engineering in Florida, blending history, architecture, and coastal scenery in a single site.
