A month ago I was quite desperate for not having enough material for a complete video dedicated to the Oehler Motorsport's Porsche 992 GT3 R, fitted with a custom unmuffled exhaust, that I filmed in Monza during the annual track day by kunoschaer.ch, but with a little commitment I managed to produce a fairly complete video, albeit short. Now I'll tell you why. Typically the "R", Porsche's GT3-class car, comes with a visible muffler on the rear of the car. Despite that it still manages to be one of the most melodic sounding cars in the field, being also loud enough for my liking. Unconsciously there has always been a small desire to be able to hear one of the GT3-class Porsches with a fully unmuffled exhaust and luckily I've already had the pleasure of seei.. hearing my dream come true a couple of times with some old 991.2 GT3 Rs. Never I would have imagined to hear a 992 fitted with such an exhaust, given the stringent noise regulations of recent years. And in fact that's the reason behind the few shots I managed to take of that X-pipe exhaust. Last June during Kuno's track day I made a quick reconnaissance in the pits early in the morning and I saw that white 992 next to a 991.2 GT3 R with Gulf-inspired livery, not paying much attention to them considering them cars that are now too common for me. As soon as the mechanics warmed them up, they immediately became the cars I would have loved to record the most during the two-day event. Unfotunately my plans ended halfway through the first day as these two 911s and most of the other cars (e.g. a Maserati MC20 GT2, a Mercedes C63 DTM, a Ligier JS PX) were banned from the track, unless they could silence the exhaust. Don't know if it was a misunderstanding between the organizer and Monza or if the latter forgot to notify the former. The fact is that Monza is holding most of the midweek tests and track days with noise limits since 2024. It never had any until the end of 2023. Kuno wasn't able to organize an event last year due to Monza's renovation works, so that's probably why they got this nasty surprise last June. Just my guesses. Back to the video now. Not limit myself to produce a Youtube Short or an Instagram Reel about that 992, I managed to put together a little comparison of how the 992's 4.2-litre flat-6 sounds like based on the various exhaust types they might be fitted with during various events. Starting from the unmuffled exhaust I highly doubt we'll be able to hear it around. It's definitely too loud. And in all honesty, it also produces a pretty strange and metallic tone compared to the more tipical high pitched sound of the 'two pipes converging at the center, but remaining separated' layout (aka the 911 RSR GTE exhaust). Then you can hear some accelerations and fly bys when the white 992 was fitted with the typical 'OEM' muffled exhaust. This is how the car sounds like in most of the championships like the GT World Challenge, GT Open, DTM or IMSA SportsCar. I also added a couple of older clips of similar 992s at Monza. In conclusion, the most painful note: there's an even more muffled exhaust. Still don't know exacty what shape it has, if it's just a bigger muffler or there's a secondary one. In low light conditions, I noticed that the GT3 Rs tend to have glowing red exhausts behind the rear wheels with this spec, meaning there's extra metal where there isn't with the OEM exhaust (pause the video at 35 seconds and you'll understand what I'm talking about, the area on the right between the pipe and the rear wheel arch, which also has a heat shield around it). I knew this configuration was already in use for the Nordschleife races (24 Hours and the NLS Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie) but unfortunately it has also been adopted by the WEC and the ELMS since 2025, following the regulation that forces 'LMGT3s' to not produce more than 100dB of noise.
