OnBoard the iconic Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO with Hans-Joachim Stuck at the Salzburgring!

Last weekend I spent three beautiful days at the Salzburgring for the first 'Legends Grand Prix', an event dedicated to celebrating historic, unique and legendary cars together with the drivers of the past who led them to victory. It's a weekend without actual races, but only demos and free practice sessions during which single-seaters, sports prototypes and GT cars from the early 20s to the 90s can stretch their legs on track again. One of these machines was the legendary Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO, brought to the event by Audi Tradition, and driven primarily by its former driver Hans-Joachim Stuck but also by Tom Kristensen in Sunday's wet sessions. In 1988 Audi entered the American Trans-Am championship with the aim of increasing their reputation overseas. Their 200 Trans-Am proved to be so dominant that after winning the championship that year (both the constructors' and the drivers' title with Hurley Haywood) Trans-Am rules were drastically changed: AWD system was banned and only domestic engines could be used. So rather than racing with a limited car in the following Trans-Am season, Audi signed up for the 1989 IMSA season in the GTO category, taking advantage of the still great freedom of design and rule in that championship, plus the ability to use the 200 Trans-Am as a starting point for the development of their new weapon still being able to exploit both the engine and the four-wheel drive. Rather than being based on a road going chassis, almost nothing is shared between an IMSA GTO silhouette and a road car. The aesthetics of their GTO car were taken from the production Audi 90, but the body was made out of carbon. Extensive wind-tunnel testing and careful weight placement of the mandatory ballast was done during the development and Audi even fitted the car with real-time telemetry, their first ever. The Audi 90 GTO was powered by a 2.2-liter, turbocharged 5-cylinder engine able to produce 720 hp at 7,500 rpm and 720 Nm of torque. Hurley Haywood and Hans-Joachim Stuck were chosen as drivers for the 1989 season. The 90 IMSA didn’t fare too well out of the gate. Audi missed the first two races of the season, due to a further necessary development of the engine and then both cars didn't managed to finish the third round as Haywood had an accident and Stuck suffered gearbox failure. Audi had no points three races into the 15-race championship. But things changed from Round 4. Stuck drove to victory at Summit Point and in many other rounds (Mid-Ohio, Topeka-Heartland Motorsports Park, Sears Point, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock and Laguna Seca) ably supported by Haywood who delivered an Audi one-two on five occasions. However, the points lost in the opening three rounds and a dramatic final race where both cars failed to reach the finish line delivered the championship to the very consistent Pete Halsmer with his Mercury Cougar XR7 meant that Stuck finished the season in third place behind Pete Halsmer' teammate, Wally Dallenbach Jr., and Audi finished second in the constructors' championship. Audi shifted focus back to Europe after this.
