Join forager Melina Lydia as she explores a local hiking trail in Santa Cruz, California, identifying California Bay Laurel. Melina recently graduated from UCSC with a degree in plant science and literature and is just beginning her foraging journey. In this video, she shares how to identify Bay Laurel by its distinctive leaves and its strong sweet scent that makes it easy to spot. Melina also covers the important difference between Bay Laurel nuts and California Buckeye nuts, which can look quite similar but have very different characteristics—crucial knowledge for any forager! This video was created as part of the USDA Indigenous Food Sovereignty Initiative, in collaboration with NĀTIFS, to support Indigenous-led education on responsible foraging and food sovereignty.
