Ivan Lopez The Sports Arena as a Venue for Protest

Ivan presents an observational analysis of the diverse cases of the sports arena as a venue for protestcontradicting Western fallacies of the entertainment industry as an apolitical environment. This work is written to remind the public, activists and the informed that spaces for speech are everywhere should we be brave and creative enough to rally. Focusing on recent Northern European cases of activism to appeal to cultural and communal ideals such as the Green Brigrade’s Celtic culture in Northern Scotland, or Norway’s Bodo/Glimt football association’s commitment to humanitarian causes across the continent and globe. Then, we will move East to review a historical event during the Byzantine rule of Constantinople (modern-day Turkey) where the Nika riots raged on for two weeks following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Lastly, this presentation will fly across ‘the pond’ to showcase the effects individuals have had on social movements in the United States, olympics, boxing, and NFL industries.
