Sayward BC – Logging, Growth & Change | Part 2 In Part 2, we continue the story of Sayward, following the community as it grows and transforms through the early 1900s. The settlement was officially renamed Sayward in 1911 after William Parsons Sayward, a prominent lumber merchant. Logging quickly became the backbone of life here, with rail and coastal logging operations shaping both the economy and the landscape. Camps, rail lines, and logging roads defined daily life for workers and families. Nearby Kelsey Bay played a vital role as a transportation hub, serving as a wharf and ferry connection that linked Sayward to the rest of coastal British Columbia. For decades, access was still largely by water until post–World War II roads finally connected the community to Campbell River. This chapter combines historic imagery with modern drone views, capturing how the forest, shoreline, and community have evolved over time—while still holding onto the rugged character that defines Sayward today.
