Forest Fires at Lost River State Park; Making the Best of a Bad Situation

In this Episode: We’re starting off 2024, and it’s kinda like a house on fire, or a forest fire, but certainly not a calming campfire… Yes this episode is all about fire, and that’s not what we had intended. While on our way to Lost River Campground, we notice many forest fires bouncing through the National Forests in Virginia. As we made our way down I81 we kept seeing them everywhere. We had no idea what we were heading into. When we reached our campground, there was talk of an evacuation. We quickly realized we were in no immediate danger, but we were troubled nonetheless. The next morning we headed to Lost River State Park, which was 10 or so miles away. While driving that direction, we started to see smoke. The close we got to the State Park, the more we realized, it was the State Park that was on fire. We talked to some Rangers at the Park Office, and were told the whole area was in a state of emergency, and there was to be no hiking. Next Week: We’ll review the campground and explore a smoky cave.
