DCS Operation & SIS: When Does a Trip Become a SIF? In this video, I use the DCSimXL Simulator to demonstrate how Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) can be applied during crude oil transfer from a truck to a storage tank. We explore three realistic scenarios that challenge us to think critically about whether a trip function should be classified as a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) or just a basic control interlock. 🔹 Scenario 1: Inadvertent closure of the ball valves on the truck suction line. 🔹 Scenario 2: Inadvertent closure of the ESD valve on the pump discharge to the tank. 🔹 Scenario 3: Buckling of the truck tank due to pumping after the truck empties. Through this simulation, we highlight key principles of: ✔️ Differentiating BPCS interlocks from SIS. ✔️ Understanding Layers of Protection (LOPA). ✔️ Assessing risks in truck-to-tank crude transfer operations. Whether you’re a process engineer, control room operator, or safety professional, this video provides practical insights into process safety, instrumentation, and control system design. 👉 Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more content on process plant design, DCS training, and refinery operations. #DCS #SIS #ProcessSafety #OilAndGas #RefineryOperations #DCSimXL #ProcessEngineering #ControlSystems #SafetyCulture
