It was introduced to Indonesia in 1872 and is now widely cultivated for its high-quality wood for furniture and its ecological value as a shade tree and pollutant absorber. Its distinctive features include a tall, straight trunk, pinnately compound leaves, and hard capsules containing winged seeds. Characteristics Height: Can reach 30-40 meters. Trunk: Straight, cylindrical, with bark changing from smooth (young) to rough and scaly (old). Leaves: Even-pinnately compound, with leaflets oblong to elliptical, glossy dark green above. Flowers: Small, greenish-yellow, borne in panicles. Fruit: Large, elongated-egg-shaped capsules, hard, brown, splitting into 4-5 segments when ripe. Benefits Wood: Strong, resistant to cracking, often used for furniture and carvings. Ecology: A good shade tree, absorbs pollutants, and can grow in brackish soil near the coast. Health: The seeds and fruit are used as herbal remedies to lower blood pressure (hypertension), as antioxidants, as anti-inflammatory agents, and more. Origin and Distribution Origin: Central and South America. Introduced to Indonesia: 1872 via India, and rapidly expanded in Java around 1892-1902. Growing Requirements Grows optimally in tropical areas with full sun.
