Norfolk Southern had recently began running some of these large 10,000 foot mega-trains on the CNO&TP that required distributed power not on the rear of the train, but in the middle. This is a blast from the past reminiscent of Southern Railway days in which large trains required radio controlled mid-train slave engines to get tonnage over the ruling grades. Although everything is now digital or satellite controlled the Southern used converted box cars, often called cracker boxes, to convert radio signals from the head end to MU control functions transferred to the coupled slave engine. The Southern often used inverted colored number boards on their locomotives that had the equipment to be a slave master to indicate to anyone that it had that ability. After hearing of such a train running today I decided to catch it on the ruling northbound grade in Lancing, TN. I overheard on the radio the train was 11,512 feet long, 15,186 tons, 194 cars long, and had 2 slave engines cut in 131 cars deep. This monster train had a southbound sitting and waiting for it clear up at C.W. Tower before making move. The head 2 EMD SD70s were howling in notch 8 throttle trailing a Dash9-44CW. Two GE ES44ACs were in the middle shoving hard to keep the train rolling. I do not typically film every car on a train for video space, but I made an exception this time to showcase the shear size of this train. Enjoy!
