Wild Kiwis on Stewart Island RTW S6 EP15 In this episode of our round-the-world motorcycle journey we travel to Stewart Island, New Zealand’s third island, one of the wildest and most remote places in the country. Known in Māori as Rakiura, Stewart Island is famous for its untouched wilderness, incredible coastal scenery, and being one of the best places in New Zealand to see wild kiwi birds. We take the ferry across the Foveaux Strait from Bluff to Oban and begin exploring the island on foot, hiking sections of the legendary Rakiura Track, one of New Zealand’s famous Great Walks. Stewart Island is a paradise for nature lovers, with dense native forest, rugged coastline, hidden beaches and some of the most pristine landscapes in the country. But the real reason many travellers come here is for one unforgettable experience: seeing a wild kiwi in its natural habitat. Stewart Island is home to the Southern Brown Kiwi (Tokoeka), and unlike most places in New Zealand, these iconic birds can sometimes be seen in the wild at night. After joining a kiwi spotting tour, we head out into the darkness hoping to see one of New Zealand’s rarest and most beloved animals. It’s a reminder of just how special Stewart Island is, and why this remote island has become one of the best wildlife experiences in New Zealand.
