Zu seinen Orgellehrern gehörten unter anderen Ralph Downes, Gillian Weir und Nicolas Kynaston. Komposition studierte er bei Herbert Sumsion und Alan Ridout. Von 1972 bis 1975 war er Organ Scholar am Jesus College in Cambridge. Nach dem Studium wirkte Archer zunächst als Assistant Organist an Norwich Cathedral (1978–1983) und Bristol Cathedral (1983–1990) und war von 1996 bis 2004 Organist and Master of the Choristers an der Kathedrale von Wells. 2004 wurde er als Nachfolger von John Scott zum Organist and Director of Music an der St Paul's Cathedral in London ernannt. Von 2007 bis 2018 war Archer Director of Chapel Music and Organist am Winchester College, unterrichtete dort im Fach Orgel und leitete den Winchester College Chapel Choir. His organ teachers include Ralph Downes, Gillian Weir, and Nicolas Kynaston and he studied composition with Herbert Sumsion and Alan Ridout. He was later organ scholar at Jesus College in Cambridge. His first posts were as Assistant Organist at Norwich Cathedral (1978–1983) and Bristol Cathedral (1983–1990). In 1996 he was appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers at Wells Cathedral, and from 2004 to 2007 he took over as organist and Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral in London from John Scott. In August 2007 he took up a position as Director of Chapel Music and Organist at Winchester College, where he was in charge of the Winchester College Chapel Choir as well as teaching composition and the organ. Archer moved from Winchester College in 2018 to pursue his career as a choral and orchestral conductor and composer. As a composer, his harmonic language is accessible and traditional but it is never bland. More than 250 of his compositions have been published. As an organist and conductor he is in frequent demand and has given solo concerts all over the world, including concert tours in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and in Europe.
