Bancroft Ontario is home to 1500 mineral types that can be found all over the area. 94% of all minerals in existence are present in the Canadian shield. Canadian shield is ancient rock and is some of the oldest rock on earth. There is a rich mining history here in which miners extracted various types of minerals. Uranium mining and prospecting were big in the region. There are uranium mines that operated for years before closing down. The Bicroft and Madawaska mine were big producers of uranium, which is a key element in nuclear power plants. These mines were underground operations and exposed the workers to many hazards as well as radiation. Many types of jems and rocks can be found in Bancroft. Mineral prospecting for all kinds of stones is common in town and provides a fun experience to learn about geology and the Canadian shield. The mineral museum shows the various types of minerals that can be found all over southern Ontario. It is a really fun place full of incredible history and many places to explore.
