Mezzo-soprano Robin Hendrix shares her work on the vocal technique of Edmund John Myer, whose book, The Renaissance of the Vocal Art, was published in 1902. His discovery of a simple three-part gesture to aid in naturally opening the ventricles of the larynx to produce a beautiful tone sought to revolutionize the vocal scene in his epoch. He did not succeed in convincing most voice teachers to use his discovery, but he continued writing, His last book, The Vocal Istructor, is the most succinct version of how to achieve his gesture, along with exercises and vocalises. Most of Myer's books can be downloaded for free on Archive.org. In trying to find the best possible technique for amateur singers, Robin Hendrix spent years researching the methods the great singers using books and recordings written in the late 1800s-early 1900s. She gathered all the elements that made up a successful technique and compiled it in her book, How to Sing Like the Great Singers. The Edmund J Myer technique wraps up all the aims and goals of the Italian school in one gracious gesture. Lift - Expand - Let Go. to be done simultaneously. The body subtly lifts to the energy level of the first note to be sung, and continues rising and falling slightly as the music does, to suppor the effort needed. Lift the body up from the hips, Expand all cavities and the hips outward (they automatically fill deeply with air), and Let Go (devitalize all the muscles above the collarbone). Hand gestures are explained in this and other videos. The result is a beautifully placed voice with a velvety texture and real control.
