Mt Hamilton East Face, first ski descent

In November 2024 we skiied the first known descent of this burly 1800m line on the wild East face on Mt Hamilton, in the Malte Brun range of Aoraki Mt Cook National Park, New Zealand. Id been thinking about and looking at the face for over a year, and the phenomenal late season conditions in 2024 left the entire park plastered in snow which stretched almost the whole way down to the Murchison glaicer. After a couple of failed attempts turned around by poor weather, on 6th Novemebr we took advantage of a 36 hour weather window and climbed the West face in the dark to hit the summit for 8am. There had been a large avalanche cycle a few days earlier as rain had fallen on the previous snowfall, but this was followed by a solid freeze leaving good corn wherever we werent on old avvy debris. After moving slowly and carefully through the huge exposure above monsterous seracs on the summit ice field, there was some tricky route finding to get through the rock and ice band connecting the upper face to the main body of the route. Once through we could open it up and hoon down the remainder of the face to the Dixon glacier. Then followed the obligatory NZ morraine bash, 5km through teetering boulders to get to the Mannering glacier and our pickup.
