What if Stannis Baratheon DIDN'T Die? Let’s explore the depths of it in the video. Stannis watches as the Bolton horsemen close in on him. He can hear their battle cries and sees their lances lower as they commit themselves to the charge. They are just a few seconds away. Behind him, Ser Godry shouts orders as his men prepare themselves to meet their charge. Ser Richard Horpe organizes a shieldwall, preparing their defenses for the upcoming charge. Stannis, though, allows himself a rare smile as he draws Lightbringer. And then, he nods toward Ser Clayton Scuggs. The man fires a burning arrow in the air, and the signal is given. Behind him, there is the mechanical twang of machines as his hidden catapults unleash their barrage. Huge stones the size of a man's head fly across the sky from hidden catapults behind snow banks. They fall short of the advancing horsemen but instead strike the frozen river in front of them. The ice shattered like glass, leaving gaping holes in the lake and jagged cracks that spread all across the river, right under the Boltons’ feet. Their battlecries are replaced like screams in an instant as men and horses and pulled under the icy waters by the dozen. A few rear back and try to retreat, but the cracks chase after them like jagged snakes, and the fissures grow wider. He signals his men to open fire, raining arrows and crossbows. These missiles are weighted and only add more holes in the river, knocking men off horses and throwing them in the river. Stannis pulls his men back as the Bolton’s momentum is broken entirely. About a third of the original attack force comes rushing in. The rest are either in the river or retreating to safety. But those who remain move at a cautious walk, afraid of cracking the ice further. Among them is Hosteen Frey, who waves his longsword around, urging his men to attack. But this attack is easily beaten back as Stannis’s men swarm the few attackers and hack them down. Within minutes, the Frey attack was entirely cut apart, leaving the Baratheons in control of the field. A cheer rings out through their lines as they shout jeers and mockery at the retreating Northmen. However, Stannis does not join them as he knows that this is only the first wave. The Freys were expendable as far as the Northmen were concerned, and now the real army arrives as Ramsay takes the lead alongside the Dustins, Ryswell, Umbers, and whatever Northmen chose to pledge loyalty to them. With the center field turned into a river, Ramsay must instead direct his forces in a sweeping flanking movement to try and envelop Stannis’s lines. They move on either side of the ice river and prepare to attack. However, their assault is halted by the Baratheon’s troops. The Northern Houses who pledged themselves to Stannis have now joined the fight. The Glovers, Mormonts, Karstarks, and Mountain Clansmen meet their countrymen and halt their advance behind a wall of spears. Though none of them are keen on fighting their brother Northerners, this doesn’t make them any less ferocious as they withstand charge after charge from Ramsay’s forces. But if the Bastard of Bolton hoped to break Stannis’s army, he was sorely mistaken. On the right wing, House Manderly decides to act. With their three hundred men, they turn upon their Bolton allies, striking them from behind and scattering their forces. Seeing the Boltons collapsing on that side, the Cerwyns and Tallharts on that flank join in, slaughtering the men they were fighting alongside just moments before. The entire right collapses, and Stannis turns his attention to strike at the left where Ramsey and his forces are hard-pressed. Seeing their offensive failing, he calls for a retreat back to the walls of Winterfell, his forces now greatly reduced in this fighting. By the time the last of the Boltons hobble through the gates that shut behind them, they are not in a good place. Roose organizes the defenses as best he can in anticipation of a siege. The only silver lining was that their forces were not destroyed. They still have enough men for a siege. More importantly, many of the northern lords and ladies remain inside the castle. They could be used as hostages if it comes to another battle. Roose watches as the Baratheon forces get to work, starting to set up siege lines and rolling up their catapults. He knows the weather will soon turn bad, and they will be forced to break off the siege. When that happens, he can send Ramsey out to hunt them down. Stannis has no intention of waiting for a siege, however. While his men busy themselves for this offensive, he summons Theon Greyjoy. Stannis: It was said you once infiltrated Winterfell to capture it during the War of the Five Kings. Twice this castle was taken through treachery. Let us make it a third time, but now let us bring it back to its rightful owners. Do this, and I shall grant you the mercy of a clean death. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
