THIS VIDEO: She grew up in the town of Yokosuka, which was home to a major American naval base. After being away from the town for ten years she began returning on weekends to photograph. Other Japanese photographers like Daido Moriyama had photographed the town – mainly focusing on the American Quarter. Ishiuchi – having experienced growing up there as a young woman, approached the subject in a more intimate and personal manner. She produced photographs that are personal and political by interweaving aspects of her own identity and experience with the broader history of postwar Japan. She took the title,Yokosuka Story, from a Japanese pop song. For her Hiroshima series she primarily focussed on objects that had been in direct contact with the bodies of the victims at the moment of the bombing. She also expanded upon her backlighting process that she had used while photographing her mother’s undergarments. 1-on-1 MENTORING: https://graemewilliams.co.za/mentor-p...
