Dana Cuff Director, cityLAB at UCLA Among the largest public landowners in Southern California cities are its educational institutions, many of which are struggling with issues ranging from declining enrollments to budget constraints. At the same time, one of the greatest public needs is to produce more affordable housing, since nearly one million Southern California residents pay more than 70 percent of their income on housing. cityLAB’s ongoing research examines the design of infill affordable housing for K-12 and community college schools. cityLAB is visualizing such projects, creating a series of site design prototypes that demonstrate benefits to schools, residents, and neighborhoods. Presented as part of The Essential Housing Campaign, a community-building campaign, led by The Housing Innovation Collaborative, to build more housing for our essential workers in the communities they serve, in Los Angeles and beyond. 0:00 Hook 0:50 Introduction 1:00 cityLAB background 2:21 cityLAB pioneering new housing typologies 2:30 Backyard homes context Schoolyard Housing Overview 4:46 Schoolyard housing 5:18 Number of potential sites 6:34 Teachers housing affordability challenges 7:44 Benefits of on-site housing 8:18 Examples of schoolyard housing Eight Steps Towards Implementation 9:04 Challenges in implementation 10:04 1.
