They noticed that all the colors could be divided into four categories, and that these categories matched up with the four seasons of the year. Early color consultants reversed Summer and Winter in error. Summer is a time of brightness and you see bright cool colors like rose red, swimming pool blue, bright blue skies and emerald green grass; while winter is a time of greyness, with blue-grey skies and winter white landscapes. Spring is also a bright season, but the colors are yellow toned, like spring green, tomato red and lemon yellow; and Autumn is a season with muted and drab colors that have golden undertones. Early image consultants took the artists literally and gave periwinkle blue and violet to the Spring category, simply because those flowers bloomed in spring. Both these colors are clearly bright cool colors and belong in the Summer category. These are not the only errors in terms of the wallets and drapes used by many image consultants. In order to be good at color analysis, you must learn how to distinguish a bright warm blue from a bright cool blue, a warm fuchsia from a cool fuchsia, etc. The four seasons of color are wonderful for categorizing colors, but first, the colors need to be correctly place in their seasons. Some colors are best used for decorating and not for wearing next to the face. Even if you don't wear all four seasons, you still need to be able to identify any and all colors. It is not possible to be more than one season, if your goal is to look your best at all times. Yes, with a great suntan you might be able to "cheat" with some colors, but you'll still look best in your version of the color. The majority of people look best in the bright cool colors from the Summer season, because they are genetically dominant.
