If there is one day that defines the "rugged beauty" of the Pennine Way, this is it. Today, I leave the postcard-perfect village of Malham to climb onto the high karst plateaus and tackle the ascent of Fountains Fell and the mighty Pen-y-ghent. At 58, this 15-mile stretch is a vertical challenge. We aren't just walking; we’re climbing through geological history. The Day’s Highlights: Malham Cove: Starting the day by scaling the steps of this 260ft-high limestone amphitheater. Walking across the famous Limestone Pavement (watch your ankles!) feels like stepping onto another planet. Malham Tarn: A peaceful moment by the highest marl lake in England before the real climbing begins. Fountains Fell: The "hidden" challenge of the day. A long, steady pull with incredible views back toward the Malham landscape. Pen-y-ghent: The star of the show. We take the steep, rocky "scramble" up the Pennine Way route to the summit at 2,277ft (694m). The wind at the top was no joke! The Descent to Horton: Finishing the day in the famous hiking hub of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the heart of the Three Peaks country. The Physical Reality: Distance: ~14.5 miles (23km). Elevation: Serious climbing! Over 2,800ft of total ascent. The Challenge: I’m sharing how I managed my pace on the steep Pen-y-ghent crags and the importance of trekking poles for a 58-year-old’s knees on those heavy limestone descents. This is the Pennines at their most spectacular. It’s tough, it’s windy, and the views from the summit of Pen-y-ghent make every drop of sweat worth it. Have you stood on top of Pen-y-ghent? Let me know in the comments if you found the "scramble" section as exhilarating (or exhausting) as I did! 👇 SUBSCRIBE to follow my 125-mile journey north to Greenhead! #pennineway #hikingroutes #gopro #hikingtrails #hiking #Pennines #thepennineway
