After the high-altitude drama of Hatterrall Ridge, the journey from Pandy to Monmouth feels like stepping into a pastoral painting. But don't let the "gentle" reputation fool you—at 17 miles under a blazing sun, this stretch is a true test of heat management and endurance for any hiker. Today was all about the "rolling" miles—navigating stiles, crossing historic battlefields, and finding moments of peace in the intense summer heat. The Highlight: A Moment in History The standout memory from this leg wasn't a landmark, but a feeling. On a day where the temperature soared, we found sanctuary under the canopy of a colossal Oak tree. Looking hundreds of years old, its massive limbs provided a "cathedral of shade" for a well-earned lunch. Sitting there, looking out over the shimmering fields, you really feel the weight of time on this ancient border path. What’s in this video: White Castle (Castell Gwyn): Exploring the stunning, moated ruins of this 12th-century fortress. It’s one of the best-preserved "Three Castles" of the Gwent Marches. Orchard Country: Walking through the heart of cider territory—beautiful, symmetrical rows of apple trees stretching toward the horizon. The Heat Challenge: I talk about the reality of hiking long distances in high temperatures at 58—hydration strategies, protecting the skin, and the importance of finding that perfect shade. Llangattock Lingoed: Passing through this charming red-earth village with its historic 13th-century church. Entering Monmouth: Crossing the iconic Monnow Bridge—the only remaining fortified medieval bridge in Britain—to celebrate the end of a long, hot 17-mile day. The Stats: Distance: ~16.5 miles (26.5km). Terrain: Undulating farmland, quiet lanes, and red-soil paths. The "Cool Down": How I recovered after a day of sun-baked walking to get ready for the final push south. If you’ve ever found "The Perfect Tree" on a hike, tell me about it in the comments!
