Are you switching your dog's food? If your dog is going from kibble to fresh dog food, follow these easy steps to ensure success! Ari Pomo, CPDT-KA, PSRI walks us through transitioning and what to look out for. Learn more about transitioning your dog food here: • How to Transition to Fresh Dog Food with O... https://blog.myollie.com/ollie-asks-a... ------------------ Hi all! This is Ari with OllieHealth, and today we’re going to talk about transitioning your dog from eating traditional dry kibble to fresh dog food. When you transition your dog to new food, you want to make sure that your dog’s digestive system doesn’t FREAK OUT with all the changes. And by “freak out,” I mean GI upset, like vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. In order to avoid that, most vets recommend a 7-10 day transition period. Your dog’s stomach flora needs this time to adjust to a new diet—especially one with unprocessed and easily digestible ingredients, like fresh dog food. That’s a big change! Here’s an example timeline: On days 1-3, serve 25% of the whole portion size of the new food mixed with 75% old food. On days 4-6, serve 50% of the new food mixed with 50% of the old food. On days 7-10, serve 75% of the new food mixed with 25% of the old food After that, feel free to serve 100% of the new food! One of the most important things to note, though, is that EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT. So, if your pup is showing signs of an upset stomach or is simply “acting weird” at mealtime, wait a few more days before continuing to increase the amount of fresh food you’re giving your dog. Pups with sensitive stomachs, food allergies, or other GI diseases may also benefit from a longer transition period. Also, remember that most fresh dog foods have customizable portions. So, if you need to adjust the portion size because your pup seems to be gaining or losing unwanted weight, do it! No one knows your pup better than you. Now let’s quickly discuss transitioning to other meal plans. If your dog is transitioning from a traditional dry kibble to a baked dog food, follow the same steps we went through earlier. And lastly, if you’re mixing baked food with fresh food, which is always a great option, feel free to try the 7-10 day transitioning process with both the new baked food and new fresh food at the same time. You know your dog best, so if they seem to be having a hard time with it, try transitioning to the baked food first. Once you’ve reached your desired proportion of your old dry food and the new baked food, start adding in the new fresh dog food. In two to three weeks, your dog should be thriving on the mixed meal plan you chose for them. Dogs don’t have the luxury of choosing their own diet and lifestyle. They rely on you for that! Do them a solid and pay close attention these next few days and weeks during and after transitioning to fresh dog food, and tweak as needed.
